I realised that to sculpt this sound I really would have liked to use sound-file convolution for cross-synthesis. Unfortunately:, the CCM did not own an expensive Unix workstation to run the CARL software distribution (Loy Reference Loy2002), and my attempts to quickly port Mark Dolson’s convolvesf application to a Macintosh System 6 were too difficult to complete while following our 60 hour a week recording schedule. Instead, the airport was created with reverb, live equalisation and panning, and the Greek chorus modulated a gated Buchla Touché drone providing the pitched resonance. When production moved from Oakland to NYC in the fall, and Tom Hamilton took over my role, I finally had time to create the tool I no longer needed for Improvement, but wanted regardless. I bought a book on programming with Think C and the Mac Toolbox, and started work on SoundHack (Figure 1). My main motivation for programming SoundHack was to make new computer music techniques easily available to the experimental musician community. I became aware of much of the interesting research in computer music during my time as a research assistant at the Center for Music Experiment at UC San Diego (1984–87). Not only was I excited by the sonic possibilities of these techniques, but I was also excited at what sonic creations experimental and electronic musicians might make with them. There was also a very practical motivation for the development of SoundHack. ![]() At the time, the tools that we used all had their own sound file formats.

Sears, Roebuck and Company owned the building from its conception until it sold it in 1994. Willis Tower in Chicago, formerly the Sears Tower. It is the largest skyscraper in the United States and was for a time the largest skyscraper in the world though it has since been surpassed. As part of the deal whereby they agreed to lease 140,000 square feet of the building, they were given the naming rights to the tower, which had been known as the Sears Tower since its opening in 1973. Willis Group Holdings became a major tenant of the building in March, 2009. Only the Willis Tower can do that.On July 16, 2009, the largest skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois was officially renamed Willis Tower. If you dare to step onto them, you'll have the peculiar feeling of floating over a Windy City, which becomes almost toy-like in appearance. And the newly-installed 'Ledge' has glass-bottomed balconies extending several metres out from the Tower. On a clear day you can see across the 161 kilometres of lake to Michigan State in the east, and take in large tracts of Wisconsin and Indiana to the north and south. Whatever you call it, you can't argue with the view from the Skydeck. ![]() But if you ask any self-respecting Chicagoan, it remains the Sears Tower to this day. ![]() Then, in 2009, the Willis Insurance Group took up some office space, and bought the name. Sears abandoned it in 1992, leaving it without an official name. But it lost ground in the 1980s, and the Sears Tower was never fully occupied. It was built in the heyday of the Sears Company, when it was one of the biggest retailers in the US. The Willis Tower itself has had a few dramas along the way, too. The Skydeck opened at the same time as the building – in 1974 – and has since undergone a dramatic upgrade. That's an eye-watering 412 metres above the busy city streets – high enough to make your ears pop, on the way up in the lift. It has a purpose-built deck, the Skydeck, which sits almost at the top, on its 103rd floor. The lazy steps it takes, to get up to its highest point, suggest a breezy casualness towards its epic size – which goes down well with the citizens of the Windy City.īut the thing that matters most to the visitor – apart from the fact that the Willis Tower is always there, no matter where you are in Chicago – is that this is a tower built to be climbed and viewed from. Others may have acquired the title since, but the Willis Tower remains the tallest building in Chicago, and the US – as well as one of its most recognisable. So the Willis Tower holds a special place in their affections, ever since it seized the 'tallest building in the world' title way back in 1973, when its antennae scraped over the 518-metre mark. The Willis Tower is at its best when you're dangled over one of its glass-bottomed balconies 396 metres above Chicago.įor the city that invented the skyscraper, size against the skyline has always mattered to Chicagoans. ![]() I've said it before but I really like the authors style of writing and clarity of explanations. In my opinion, this book would be a great book for junior to mid level developers who really want to take JavaScript seriously - I know it's not really a language a lot of developers like to take seriously. I believe this book would make a great addition to any developers reference books. I am still a big fan of the authors writing style and the way he explains things seems to resonate well with me. I still very much enjoyed this book, and again I must admit to the fact that I haven't read it cover to cover, but I am still dipping in and out of it. Part 3ĭisussed Node a little more and goes a bit more in depth on speed and performance. There is also great discussion on maintainability and debugging. Marijn spends quite a bit of time discussing speed and performance aspects of various software development languages and what developers should be looking out for. The book also then digs deep into the latest ES6 Features like:Īll code examples have been written in ECMAScript 2015 (ES6) syntax which is ideal for programmers working with modern web application frameworks.įor the Junior developers, be warned though the book does ramp up fairly quickly in part 1, but if you have a grounding on the basics of software development you should be OK. Its worth a read even for the most seasoned of developers, if like me and the memory is not as great as it used to be, its a great refresher. It then also discusses the fundamental aspects of JavaScript and programming languages in general covering details like: Part 1Ĭaters for the novice or student developers and provides some great detail by discussing aspects like processors and memory that developers should have an understanding of. The book is divided into the 3 parts which provides 3 different entry points for the 3 different audiences it caters for. So when I noticed that the author has now released a third edition to include all the new features available in JavaScript, I thought I'd get the book as another reference book for my desk. I also liked his clear and easy to follow examples. I really liked the authors ability of clearly explaining things. It was also around that time that I originally purchased Eloquent JavaScript: A Modern Introduction to Programming ( 2nd Edition ), although I can't claim I read the book cover to cover, I have certainly dipped in and out of it a number of times throughout the years. In 2013, I started doing a lot more JavaScript based work predominantly focused around developing Node.JS, I purchased a number of JavaScript based books to get myself more familiar with the language - an event I previously discussed in JavaScript - The good parts book review ![]() ![]() Official Serato support for macOS Ventura. Remember-this list focuses on the entire segment of popular-brand midsize SUVs if third-row comfort is a priority, check out our separate list where we rank SUVs by third-row capacity. Of course, size creep is in full effect some formerly compact models, like the Kia Sorento, are now mid-sizers the segment is in near-constant flux, and there might be more choices than you remember. The EPA classifies vehicle sizes by volume, but we do it by length and count anything between 187 and 201 inches in overall length as a midsize model. While Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9 emphasize suburban utility, models like the Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Grand Cherokee are tough enough and capable enough to hit the boonies right off the showroom floor. Of course, success breeds competition, and nearly every automaker fields an entry though some are more rugged than others. While few can compete with traditional sports cars or sedans in driving dynamics, they are generally driver-centric in terms of comfort, features and amenities, which goes a long way to ease stress and combat fatigue on long journeys. But the heart of the market is the midsize segment they can pack in people and cargo without being unwieldy or too thirsty. Once limited in scope, they now populate nearly every segment, from hatchback-like crossovers like the Nissan Kicks to body-on-frame leviathans like the Ford Expedition.
